Dental bridges and implants in south eastern Melbourne

At DI Dental Implant Centre, our cosmetic dentists may recommend an implant or bridge for a missing tooth space. An implant is a preferred option as it preserves the adjacent teeth. However, in some circumstances, an implant may not be possible due to insufficient bone or a medical condition. In such circumstances, a bridge may be advised.

Just as in architecture, a bridge spans the distance between two supports. In dentistry, a bridge spans the space created by a missing tooth and is secured by crowns attached to carefully prepared natural teeth on either side of the space or to implants on either side of the bridge. A high-quality prosthetic replacement fills the gap and restores your smile, confidence and function.

A bridge is the treatment of choice to replace a missing tooth when the natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth are heavily broken down, decayed or require crowns for another reason. A bridge can be used to replace one or two missing teeth in a row.

The procedure for a bridge closely resembles that for a crown. Your supportive teeth, to which the crowns are bonded, are precisely reshaped so that when your bridge is secured in place it blends seamlessly in size and appearance with your surrounding natural teeth.
Two appointments are required for this treatment. At the first appointment, your teeth are shaped to fit the bridge and a detailed impression mould is taken of your teeth and gums. This is used as a template from which your replacement bridge is sculpted in a dental laboratory. While your new bridge is being constructed, a temporary bridge may be worn.

At the second appointment, your temporary bridge is replaced with your stronger, long-term permanent bridge so you can have a new healthy, natural looking smile.

At DI Dental Implant Centre, our cosmetic dentists in Melbourne endeavour to provide the best treatment for best long-term outcomes.
